The Second Grade is a class that knows first hand the importance of working with others for hands-on activities.  In the gentle atmosphere of Grade 2, students practice the Golden Rule at all times, as they work hard on the state curriculum.Manipulatives are never out of reach and the students work in every part of the classroom throughout the integrated school day.

Children in the 2nd Grade know very well that it is a “Bully Free Zone” and mean words and actions simply do not have a place here.  Lately, the Second Grade is working on many interesting and challenging subjects and projects, such as...

Religion: First Penance and Reconciliation will be celebrated in January and First Communion will be celebrated in May.

Using shoe boxes, clay and paint, students will create “Shadowbox Tombs,” where Jesus  was laid before He rose from the dead.  These were accompanied by complete sentences about Lent and Easter.

Math: Students will learn about Time, during which the students’ arms will be the “hands” on a large “clock” drawn on the blackboard. 

Reading: We will learn strategies to better comprehend our themed stories.  Children will listen, read silently, read out loud, do shared and echo reading, write and spell daily.

Writing: We will learn how to write a friendly letter that will be mailed; an information paragraph after researching a dinosaur; and a comparison paragraph that compares and contrasts two items.

English: We will discover Contractions and antonyms!

2nd GradeScience: Students conduct experiments, such as using a thermometer tomeasure the temperature of three liquids and recording the information.

Social Studies:We will practice map skills such as using a legend, as well as celebrating the leaders of America-in history and in the present.

Cursive: We will practice our Palmer Method skills for a future with legible handwriting.

The Second Grade class knows that we are in school to learn and work hard, but we should also love and enjoy our time here and we will!
